August 26, 1910 – September 5, 1997; Mother Teresa of Calcutta is widely known for many charitable works and activities that aided in the spread of the Roman Catholic doctrine and the founding of several new charitable organizations. During her life, Mother Teresa of Calcutta (The Blessed Sister Teresa) acted as a missionary and Religious Sister (nun) in the Roman Catholic Church and administration. While the bulk of her life was spent serving her mission in India of which she became a citizen in 1948, Mother Teresa was of Albanian descent.Her most widespread mission was the Missionaries of Charity, which she herself founded. As of 2012, the Missionaries of Charity has expanded to consist of a religious congregation of more than 4,500 Religious Sisters and is currently active in over 130 countries worldwide. The Missionaries of Charity assist in the care of patients with HIV, leprosy and those in the care of hospices. The foundation also runs multiple mobile clinics, counseling centers, schools, orphanages and soup kitchens. Like Mother Teresa before them, the Religious Sisters serving in the Missionaries of Charities observe the Roman Catholic vows of obedience, chastity and poverty. Mother Teresa received both praise and criticism for her activist stands. Her most controversial standpoint being on the platform of reproductive rights for women. During her lifetime, Mother Teresa organized multiple anti-conception movements and campaigns. In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work with the poor. After her death she was awarded the title "The Blessed Mother Teresa" which indicates she on the third stage towards sainthood. The last requirement of the Roman Catholic Church for Mother Teresa to be awarded the title of Saint is a second miracle ascribed to her works.
