Mike Tyson quotes page 1
Michael Gerard Tyson was born on June 30, 1966 to Lorna Mae Smith Tyson. His father's identity
remained an issue for some time; according to his birth certificate, his biological father was Jamaican Purcell
Tyson. However, Mike claims that the man he knew as his real father was Jimmy Kirkpatrick from North Carolina who
also left Mike's mother when Mike was born, leaving her to raise the children all alone. Having lived a childhood
full of hardship and needs, Mike lost his mother at the age of 16. Since he had already been introduced to the
world of boxing, he was left in charge of a boxing manager, Cus D'Amato, who would also become his legal guardian. Because of his
troubled childhood, Tyson developed fighting techniques that caught many people's attention. Having been
arrested 38 times by the age of 13, a counselor in a detention center identified his outstanding ability. As an
amateur boxer, he was followed by a series of trainers who contributed to his rise in popularity. It was in
1981, that Mike Tyson won the first gold medal in the Junior Olympic Games. The following year he would repeat
the feat where he broke the world record for quickest knockout - 8 seconds. Mike's professional debut took place
in March, 1965 in Albany, New York where he defeated his opponent with a first- round knockout. This way of
winning every fight became his trademark and soon enough got media attention. Tyson won the heavyweight title in
1986 and lost in 1990 after a series of emotional personal issues that made him lose focus. After facing a trial
for rape, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison followed by four years on probation. After that, Tyson came back
to the boxing scene and remained there until 2005 when he retired.
