Julius Caesar quotes

100 BC – 44 BC; Gaius Julius Caesar was born into the prominent Julian clan. In 81 BC, he joined the Roman Army. Then, he quickly progressed through the Roman political system, including serving as quaestor in 69 BC, aedile in 65 BC, and governor of the province of Spain in 61-60 BC. He made a pact with Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus (Pompey) and Marcus Licinius Crassus, known as the First Triumvirate, in 60 BC, and they helped elect Caesar as Consul in 59 BC. He served eight years as the Governor of Roman Gaul beginning in 58 BC, and added France and Belgium to the Roman Empire during that time. He led two expeditions to Britain in 55 and 54 BC. While in Britain, his daughter Julia, Pompey's wife, died in childbirth. Caesar lost the support of Pompey, and the Triumvirate was officially over after Crassus was killed in battle in 53 BC. The Republican Senate ordered Caesar to return to Rome and hand over his army, but he refused. Instead, he crossed the Rubicon with his army and started a civil war with the Pompey-led Republican forces in 49 BC. After Pompey was assassinated in Egypt, Caesar appointed himself Consul and Dictator. He used his power to reform, including creating a new constitution. In 44 BC, Caesar gave himself lifetime dictatorship. A group of Republican Senators, led by Brutus, assassinated Caesar and sparked the final round of civil war, which marked the end of the Republic, and paved the way for Caesar's great nephew and designated heir, Octavian, to become the first emperor.
