Hunter S. Thompson quotes page 1

American born (July 18, 1937) journalist, Hunter S. Thompson was raised in a middle-class family but had to struggle after his father's death. As a consequence of this tragic event, poverty-stricken and lonely, he was unable to formally finish high school and spent time in prison after committing robbery. As a young man, he joined the US Air Force, just before trying journalism. This gave him a chance to travel around the US and other countries as well. He became internationally well-known after his publication of "Hell's Angels: the Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs" in 1967. He created a new type of journalism, named Gonzo. This New Journalism was based on having the journalist become a protagonist of the story, rather then keep him as an objective viewer. With the publication of many other controversial works, came a rise in popularity. He is still well-known for "Fear and loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream" published in 1971. This work would mean the beginning of the downfall of the counter culture movement, even when it became popular through Rolling Stones and a film starring Johnny Depp, in 1998. As regards politics, Thompson always spoke his mind, especially to speak against Richard Nixon, who he deeply despised. After 1972, his productivity began to decline because of his popularity. He said he could no longer get involved in investigations because everyone knew who he was. Having had a long association with alcohol and illegal drug consumption, his health became weaker and weaker. This overall decay led him to suicide at the age of 67.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention to arrive safely in a pretty and well
preserved body; but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and
loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a ride!'"

There is an ancient Celtic axiom that says "Good people drink good beer." Which is true, then
as now. Just look around you in any public barroom and you will quickly see: Bad people drink
bad beer. Think about it.

Never turn your back on Fear. It should always be in front of you, like a thing that might
have  to be killed. My father taught me that, along with a few other things that have kept
my life interesting.
Hunter S. Thompson

Sex without love is as hollow and ridiculous as love without sex.
Hunter S. Thompson

I wouldn't recommend sex, drugs or insanity for everyone, but they've always worked for me.
Hunter S. Thompson

We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to fear - fear of war, fear of poverty, fear
of random terrorism, fear of getting down-sized or fired because of the plunging economy,
fear of getting evicted for bad debts or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention
camp on vague charges of being a terrorist sympathizer.
Hunter S. Thompson

I'm a relatively respectable citizen. Multiple felon perhaps, but certainly not dangerous.
Hunter S. Thompson

Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously.

Myths and legends die hard in America. We love them for the extra dimension they provide,
the illusion of near-infinite possibility to erase the narrow confines of most men's reality.
Weird heroes and mould-breaking champions exist as living proof to those who need it that
the tyranny of "the rat race" is not yet final.
Hunter S. Thompson

Call on God, but row away from the rocks.
Hunter S. Thompson

All political power comes from the barrel of either guns, pussy, or opium pipes, and people
seem to like it that way.

There are times, however, and this is one of them, when even being right feels wrong. What
do you say, for instance, about a generation that has been taught that rain is poison and sex
is death? If making love might be fatal and if a cool spring breeze on any summer afternoon
can turn a crystal blue lake into a puddle of black poison right in front of your eyes, there is
not much left except TV and relentless masturbation. It's a strange world. Some people get
rich and others eat shit and die.

As your attorney, it is my duty to inform you that it is not important that you understand
what I'm doing or why you're paying me so much money. What's important is that you
continue to do so.
Hunter S. Thompson

Some people will tell you that slow is good – but I'm here to tell you that fast is better. I've
always believed this, in spite of the trouble it's caused me. Being shot out of a cannon will
always be better than being squeezed out of a tube. That is why God made fast motorcycles!
Hunter S. Thompson

So we shall let the reader answer this question for himself: who is the happier man, he who
has braved the storm of life and lived or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely
existed?
Hunter S. Thompson

We are all alone, born alone, die alone, and - in spite of True Romance magazines - we shall
all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the
whole way. I do not say lonely - at least, not all the time - but essentially, and finally, alone.
This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect
yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.

unemployment insurance and library cards, to absinthe and good-hearted landlords, to music

happens to be.
