Eckhart Tolle quotes page 3
What is God? The eternal One Life underneath all the forms of life. What is love? To feel the
presence of that One Life deep within yourself and within all creatures. To be it.
all love is the love of God.
Let me say it again: the present moment is all you ever have. There is never a time when
your life is not "this moment." Is this not a fact?
Love is not selective, just as the light of the sun is not selective. It does not make one
person special. It is not exclusive. Exclusivity is not the love of God but the "love" of ego.
However, the intensity with which true love is felt can vary. There may be one person who
reflects your love back to you more clearly and more intensely than others, and if that person
feels the same toward you, it can be said that you are in a love relationship with him or her.
The bond that connects you with that person is the same bond that connects you with the
person sitting next to you on a bus, or with a bird, a tree, a flower. Only the degree of
intensity with which it is felt differs.
What you react to in others, you strengthen in yourself.
The mind, to ensure that it remains in control, seeks continuously to cover up the present
moment with past and future, and so, as the vitality and infinite creative potential of Being,
which is inseparable from the Now, becomes covered up by time, your true nature becomes
obscured by the mind.
You are not your mind.
Pain is inevitable as long as you are identified with your mind, which is to say as long as you
are unconscious, spiritually speaking. I am talking here primarily of emotional pain, which is
also the main cause of physical pain and physical disease. Resentment, hatred, self-pity,
guilt, anger, depression, jealousy, and so on, even the slightest irritation, are all forms of
Sometimes letting things go is an act of far greater power than defending or hanging on.
Most people treat the present moment as if it were an obstacle that they need to overcome.
Since the present moment is Life itself, it is an insane way to live.
Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness.
How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are
having at the moment.
A significant portion of the earth's population will soon recognize, if they haven't already done
so, that humanity is now faced with a stark choice: Evolve or die.
The predominance of mind is no more than a stage in the evolution of consciousness. We need
to go on to the next stage now as a matter of urgency; otherwise, we will be destroyed by
the mind, which has grown into a monster.
The greatest achievement of humanity is not its works of art, science, or technology, but the
recognition of its own dysfunction.
Don't seek your self in the mind.
If you no longer want to create pain for yourself and others, if you no longer want to add to
the residue of past pain that still lives on in you, then don't create any more time, or at least
no more than is necessary to deal with the practical aspects of your life. How to stop creating
time? Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. Make the Now the primary
focus of your life. Whereas before you dwelt in time and paid brief visits to the Now, have your
dwelling place in the Now and pay brief visits to past and future when required to deal with the
practical aspects of your life situation.
Always say "yes" to the present moment.
The unchecked striving for more, for endless growth, is a dysfunction and a disease. It is the
same dysfunction the cancerous cell manifests, whose only goal is to multiply itself, unaware
that it is bringing about its own destruction by destroying the organism of which it is a part.
Trying to become a good or better human being sounds like a commendable and high-minded
thing to do, yet it is an endeavor you cannot ultimately succeed in unless there is a shift in
When you don't cover up the world with words and labels, a sense of the miraculous returns to
your life that was lost a long time ago when humanity, instead of using thought, became
possessed by thought.
Being must be felt. It can't be thought.
Time isn't precious at all, because it is an illusion. What you perceive as precious is not time
but the one point that is out of time: the Now. That is precious indeed. The more you are
focused on time - past and future - the more you miss the Now, the most precious thing
On a deeper level you are already complete. When you realize that, there is a joyous energy
behind what you do.
As soon as you honor the present moment, all unhappiness and struggle dissolve, and life
begins to flow with joy and ease. When you act out the present-moment awareness,
whatever you do becomes imbued with a sense of quality, care, and love - even the most
Don't take the ego too seriously.
Some changes look negative on the surface but you will soon realize that space is being
created in your life for something new to emerge.
The pain that you create now is always some form of nonacceptance, some form of
unconscious resistance to what is. The intensity of the pain depends on the degree of
resistance to the present moment, and this in turn depends on how strongly you are identified
with your mind. The mind always seeks to deny the Now and to escape from it. In other
words, the more you are identified with your mind, the more you suffer. Or you may put it like
this: the more you are able to honor and accept the Now, the more you are free of pain, of
suffering - and free of the egoic mind.
