Confucius quotes page 1

551 to 479 BC – As Master Kong to his common followers, Confucius often taught them how to foster the 'true worth' of values like modesty, respect, moral behaviors and sincerity. He believed that undertaking these values would help all humans achieve the goal of living a fulfilled life. Confucius was born to an older father and teenage mother in 551 BC. At 3 years old, he lost his elder father to old age, leaving his young mother to raise him. The rest of his childhood linked him to the then growing class known as Shi; during those formative years, Confucius often imitated commonly occurring rituals. As he grew up, he took on several careers, such as a clerk and book keeper. At age 23, Confucius' mother passed away, an event that sent him into mourning for three years. When he reached 32 years of age, he started teaching ancient rituals to ministers' sons. During the next year, he eventually moved to the Imperial capital of Lo-yang to study Chou Empire practices. There, he met the Lu's Prince, eventually fleeing with him to a bordering state and away from troubling rivals. There, he learned music—and subsequently returned to Lu to study more. Once he reached age 51, he eventually started serving as Lu's Prime Minister of Justice; he was later promoted to Lu's Prime Minister. As the Prince's hand, he helped him increase his power across the entire region. After a falling out with the Prince, Confucius left his post in Lu until he returned at the age of 68. After wandering for about 12 years and returning, he spend the rest of his days in Lu, refusing to take any governmental positions. Confucius later died after he reached 72 in the year 479 BC.
