Andy Rooney quotes page 1

January 14, 1919 – November 4, 2011; for thirty-three years, from behind a solid walnut desk, Andy Rooney in "A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney," would amuse audiences with his satirical, blunt and curmudgeon styled commentary on current events, politics, trends, new products, films, and everything between. This humorous, refreshingly honest, straight-talking, televised heart to heart, sometimes controversial, segment of CBS broadcast 60 Minutes would be Rooney's greatest legacy. Andrew Aitkin "Andy" Rooney was born in Albany, New York in 1919. He studied at Colgate University in New York, then was drafted into the army in 1941. In London, Rooney got his start in journalism writing for the military's journal Stars and Stripes. Rooney was one of the first Americans to enter and write about Nazi concentration camps. He also wrote about the entry of Paris. This up-close experience he gained with war reportage would be largely influential to his future writing and reporting. For one, it altered his position as a pacifist, as he believed there was no just war. Following the war, Rooney took a position at CBS News as a writer for Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts and then for The Garry Moore Show. A few of his special reports such as "Black History: Lost, Stolen, or Strayed" and "An Essay on War," earned him prizes; he won three Emmy Awards through his lifetime and an award from the American Writer's Guild. Married to Marguerite Rooney (nee Howard), he had four children, three of which have worked in media. In 1995 his memoir, My Way, about his days as a war reporter, was published. Rooney reported for CBS until his retirement in 2011, in which he died one month later at age ninety-two.
